Naval Architect

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent
  • Professional Chartered Status
  • Relevant previous experience
  • Member of RINA

Responsibilities (on all types of commercial vessels and superyachts):

  • Develop and undertake Naval Architecture expert services and litigation support
  • Undertake design calculations and development of technical drawings
  • Undertake site visits either individually or as part of a team. Site activities may include deadweight surveys, inclining experiments, new build construction, refit surveys and investigations.
  • Attend commissioning trials
  • Development and support of design studies and provision of technical services, to include: − Concept design (hull lines, weight estimates, etc.)

− Structural design

− Seakeeping and manoeuvrability

− Powering and propulsion studies

− Stability analysis, intact and damage

− Statutory documents (escaping, LSA, fire protection, etc.)

  • Undertake concept, initial and detailed design, technical services and project management
  • Undertake the development of new build and refit specifications
  • Undertake the preparation of proposals and bid documents
  • Work closely with Marine Engineers in the development of new vessel designs


Essential Skills:

  1. To be Client facing with good interpersonal skills
  2. Strong analytical skills, inquiring and creative mind set
  3. Proven experience in superyachts and pax/ferry vessels basic design
  4. Knowledge of Classification Societies, Flag Administrations and IMO Rules and Regulations
  5. Experience in structural analysis
  6. Experience in stability analysis, intact and damage
  7. Understanding of hydrodynamics, seakeeping and manoeuvrability
  8. Able to work independently and as part of a team
  9. Technical report writing

Desirable Skills:

  • Understanding of mainstream 2D and 3D CAD software packages
  • Experience in a ship design and build environment
  • Experience in statutory documents (escaping, LSA, fire protection, etc.)
  • Ability to write and present technical/professional papers in order to reinforce BCTQ’s key position as knowledge leaders in the industry

  • Full driving licence – preferred but not essential
  • Due to the nature of the marine business, by necessity the position requires the employee to undertake foreign travel and on occasions spend time away from home
  • Available to travel at short notice
