Principal Structural Engineer – Commercial Vessels

< Back to Job Search

As Principal Structural Engineer you will be responsible for the commercial vessel structural engineering discipline. This is a senior role involving responsibility for the delivery of all structural engineering elements of vessel design projects, consultancy projects and R&D. Design activities will range from the conceptual development of structural solutions for specialised commercial craft through to the delivery of detailed structural engineering packages. The role involves the leadership of a small team, as well as carrying out project and design work directly.

You will be involved with vessel design enquiries and the development of new technologies to meet them. Structural engineering is a key part of our client’s future vision for commercial vessel design, and it is expected that you will energetically promote and grow this area of offerings. You will engage actively in the implementation of business strategy and business development activities. You will promote the business externally through writing papers, delivering presentations and attending industry forums. The commercial vessel design team is highly dynamic and you will interact closely with colleagues responsible for Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Outfit Engineering and Production Design.

Hybrid: home and office/customer site based. This role is nominally based in our client’s Southampton office, however, they would welcome a discussion with someone with the right skill set but not based in Southampton. This is a full-time role

About You:

  • You will be a highly experienced structural engineer with extensive, relevant experience in the marine industry.
  • You will be a technical expert with significant experience in a wide range of structural design activity including but not limited to concept development, structural arrangement, design of light weight structures, design of specialised structures, foundation design, structural hand calculations, finite element analysis and detailed structural design for production.
  • You will be familiar with structural design in different materials, ideally with a bias towards lightweight aluminium structures for medium to high-speed craft.
  • You will be experienced with relevant codes of practice and Classification Society rules.
  • You will have practical experience in vessel construction.
  • You will have acted as the lead structural engineer for marine design projects and will be used to working with a range of other engineers and technical project managers.
  • You will be used to liaising with customers, ranging from operators to shipyards, and at differing levels of seniority.
  • You will have demonstrable management experience and interpersonal skills that allow you to engage with customers, stakeholders and your own team, whether face to face or remotely.
  • You will be an excellent written and verbal communicator.
  • You will be experienced in guiding and supporting colleagues, including checking work to be in accordance with quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • You will ensure that the strengths of the structural discipline are maintained and strategically developed to suit the company’s needs and business strategy.
  • You will be detail focussed and experienced in successful workload planning.
  • We expect you to share our passion for creating a more environmentally and socially sustainable future for all our stakeholders
