The Maintenance & Engineering Superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day management of vessel maintenance and engineering requirements across a ferry fleet.

The role supports safe, reliable and cost-effective vessel operations by ensuring maintenance, repairs, technical support, drydock planning and engineering resources are effectively planned and executed.

You will work closely with Operations, Engineering, Commercial, Purchasing, shipboard personnel, contractors, classification societies, flag authorities and other stakeholders to ensure vessels remain available to meet operating schedules and customer commitments.

The position provides technical oversight of vessel hull, machinery, equipment and systems, while supporting continuous improvement in maintenance practices, reliability, cost control and regulatory compliance.

Please note: Due to operational requirements, this position is fully site-based in Delta, British Columbia.

What you’ll do

• Manage the vessel maintenance programme in accordance with company policies, the Safety Management System, statutory requirements, classification requirements and applicable regulations
• Manage and support the shore-based maintenance and engineering team
• Coordinate responses to unscheduled maintenance, breakdowns, defects and operational technical issues across the fleet
• Coordinate planned maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspections, overhauls and repairs
• Prepare, manage and control maintenance, engineering and drydock budgets
• Work with Operations and senior management to support budget planning and cost forecasting
• Manage capital projects, vessel alterations and fleet improvement programmes
• Lead drydock planning, specification development, shipyard coordination and execution
• Support the planning and coordination of engineering crewing requirements with Operations
• Support fleet reliability, operational readiness and continuous improvement initiatives
• Develop and implement class-approved maintenance programmes, policies and procedures for new vessels entering the fleet
• Manage docking, repair and maintenance planning for vessels and engine room departments
• Lead the port engineering team and ensure maintenance programmes operate in accordance with company requirements
• Liaise with Operations and Commercial teams to ensure crews and relevant stakeholders receive appropriate training
• Provide leadership to the engineering team with a strong focus on safe working practices and minimising lost-time incidents
• Provide guidance, training and development to team members, support succession planning and maintain appropriate performance standards
• Ensure relevant union agreements, workers’ compensation requirements and health and safety procedures are followed
• Investigate machinery and equipment failures to establish root causes and recommend measures to prevent recurrence
• Consult with internal and external specialists on unusual or complex issues affecting vessel hull, machinery and equipment
• Support preparation and monitoring of annual maintenance and repair budgets covering vessel hull, machinery and equipment
• Assist with capital expenditure planning associated with vessel integration, upgrades and ongoing operation
• Maintain awareness of developments in ship construction, vessel technology, propulsion systems and legislative requirements that may affect fleet operations
• Attend relevant maritime industry conferences and technical events when required
• Attend shipyards and manufacturers’ facilities for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), commissioning and vessel trials when required
• Provide technical support for marine projects, including planning, workforce requirements, material quantities, equipment requirements and work schedules
• Support contract negotiations relating to shipboard personnel when required
• Maintain familiarity with company policies and applicable employment, workplace and safety legislation
• Assist with hands-on maintenance activities when required
• Perform additional duties appropriate to the position

What you’ll bring

• A post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline, or successful completion of an apprenticeship programme qualifying you as a Power, Stationary or Marine Engineer
• A Marine Certificate of Competency is preferred
• Extensive supervisory experience gained through progressively senior positions within a mechanical repair or marine engineering environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Supervisory or management training is desirable
• Strong technical knowledge with the ability to read and interpret complex technical specifications and engineering drawings
• Knowledge of vessel hull, machinery and equipment maintenance and repair
• Understanding of applicable legislation, regulations and requirements governing marine operations
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting capabilities
• Ability to make sound technical and operational decisions under time pressure
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Project and programme management capability
• Ability to lead and motivate technical teams
• Ability to mentor, train and transfer technical knowledge to other team members

The estimated salary range for this position is $144,000 – $176,000, depending on the successful candidate’s experience, technical capability and overall suitability for the role.

Final compensation will form part of a competitive total remuneration package.
