The incumbent/s of this position MUST hold and maintain a defence security clearance of NV1 (or Commonwealth equivalent), or above.
Key purpose
The purpose of this position is to provide advanced navigation training and advanced tactical training to RAN Junior Officers to a competency whereby they can perform the duties of an Officer-of-the-Watch on board a RAN vessel
Key accountabilities:
- Provide specialist Navigation Subject Matter Expertise, or specialist Warfare Subject Matter Expertise, during the development and delivery of training at the RAN BTF incorporating the Bridge Simulator
- Deliver training at the direction of OIC BTF / SNW including, during periods of intensive training, out of hours watchkeeping
- Provide course support including, but not limited to, programming, presentations, briefings, or examinations
- Contribute as directed to TA-MW course review/development process
- Maintain an up-to-date working understanding of the user functionality of the Bridge Simulator System
- Maintain a contemporary knowledge of RAN Navigation tactics, techniques and procedures
- Undertake other tasks as directed by TA-MW, through the Training Lead
- Complete annual awareness training courses on CAMPUS online training suite. When programmed complete courses in Training and Assessment (Instructors)
- Conduct refresher training and BTF systems Training at commencement of employment.
- Adhere to the business’ value system, Code of Conduct and rules aboard
Essential technical and professional skills, knowledge and qualifications
Education requirements for a Navigation specialist:
- Platform Endorsement on any major war vessel (such as Frigate or Destroyer) or minor war vessel (such as a patrol boat) within the RAN, or Commonwealth equivalent
- Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate on any major war vessel (such as a Frigate or Destroyer) within the RAN, or Commonwealth equivalent
- Successfully completed the RAN Long Navigation Course, or Commonwealth equivalent.
Or, education requirements for a Principle Warfare Officer (PWO)
- Platform Endorsement on any major war vessel (such as Frigate or Destroyer) or minor war vessel (such as a patrol boat) within the RAN, or Commonwealth equivalent and successfully completed the RAN Principle Warfare Officers (PWO) Course, or Commonwealth equivalent.
In addition:
- Obtained Platform Endorsement & Bridge Watchkeeping Certificate on any Frigate/Destroyer within the RAN, or Commonwealth equivalent.
- Experience as the PWO or Navigating Officer on a RAN Frigate or Destroyer, within the last 5 years, or Commonwealth equivalent.
Additional / special features of the role:
- The expected hours of the role are Monday-Friday
- During extensive training periods support may be required outside normal office hours. Otherwise, the hours of attendance will be 0730 to 1600 Monday to Friday
- The individual will have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers, which could cause muscle strain
- The role may require travel
