The Construction Manager provides support to business’s leadership by utilising project management principles to successfully deliver required outputs. The outputs may vary in either being part of a vessel build, vessel support or part of the support functions, such as production management or facility management.

Reports to: Production Manager

Direct Reports: Production Line Managers; HSEQ and W Team leaders

Key Relationships: Heads of the following department: Finance , SCM, HR, Programs and Quality and Design

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Planning of New Vessel Builds utilising construction management principles including the reviewing of;
    • Fabrication standards
    • Infrastructure requirements
    • Sub-contractor requirements and management
    • Construction Plan/schedule
    • Design Process
    • Resource management
    • Procurement Support
    • Safety Management
    • Risk Management
    • Certification/Compliance
    • Painting
    • Acceptance process
  • Provide Management support and input, consistent with company and Quality Management System objectives to ensure smooth interaction between all Departments and business units, external contractors and customers.
  • Identify, develop and implement construction standards and processes required to ensure outputs are delivered consistently.
  • Facilitate Teamwork interaction between internal and external parties, including:
    • Integration of disciplines across Project activities (eg Design to Production, Electrical to Mechanical etc).
  • Safety, Health & environment
    • Direct responsibility for establishing and improving safe and environmentally responsible work practices across the shipyard
    • Develop a culture of safety awareness and conduct
  • Human resource management
    • Direct management of production personnel including recruitment, training, development and performance management
    • Maintain high levels of communication with direct reports, other departments & the President and GM
    • Establish high levels of teamwork and morale
    • Continuous monitoring and management of resource plans and schedules
  • Contractor and supplier management
    • Manage external contractors as required
    • Liaise with the Procurement Manager to ensure all material requirements are met in an efficient manner (time, cost, quality)
  • Cost control
    • Establish and monitor labour and material budgets
    • Periodic reporting on cost performance and variances.
    • Identifying and implementing cost reduction initiatives
  • Quality
    • To conduct work as per business standards and procedures
    • Implement and support continuous improvement initiatives
    • Identify and implement waste elimination initiatives

Qualifications & Experience

  • Construction/Project Management roles – required, preferably in ship construction or maintenance.
  • Knowledge of ship operation and management – desired.
  • Knowledge of facility management – desired.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to understand technical documents
