Marine Engineer

The Marine Engineer is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance, preservation and readiness of the vessel’s machinery and equipment.

The role includes responsibility for engineering watchkeeping, planned and reactive maintenance, troubleshooting, fuelling, pollution prevention, technical records, procurement and inventory control.

You will work closely with the vessel’s crew, shore-based engineering team, contractors and technical management to ensure machinery, propulsion, auxiliary and safety systems remain safe, reliable and operational.

Please note: Due to operational requirements, this position is fully site-based in Delta, British Columbia.

What you’ll do

• Take responsibility for the engineering watch and safe operation of vessel machinery
• Troubleshoot and repair machinery and equipment following breakdowns or technical faults
• Maintain propulsion, auxiliary and safety equipment in accordance with the vessel’s planned maintenance system
• Coordinate external contractors undertaking repairs and maintenance onboard
• Liaise with shore-based engineering teams and technical management to facilitate repairs, contractor visits and technical support
• Provide detailed analysis of machinery breakdowns and faults to support efficient vessel recovery
• Conduct task-specific hazard assessments with the crew before maintenance and engineering work begins
• Take responsibility for machinery spaces during incidents and onboard emergencies
• Support drydock activities, vessel surveys and technical inspections
• Follow safe working practices and applicable health, safety, environmental and quality procedures
• Ensure newly appointed engineering officers and crew members understand relevant engineering procedures
• Mentor and train junior engineers in maintenance practices and vessel systems
• Ensure the efficient operation and maintenance of safety and pollution-prevention equipment in accordance with statutory requirements and company procedures
• Ensure engineering officers and crew understand and comply with relevant policies, procedures, operating instructions and standing orders
• Maintain accurate records of planned and unscheduled maintenance
• Keep standby machinery, plant and systems ready for emergency use
• Test standby and emergency systems in accordance with established procedures
• Maintain responsibility for the safety of personnel working within the engine room
• Notify the vessel Master of defects that could affect vessel safety or create a risk to the marine environment
• Allocate engineering officers and ratings specific responsibilities within the Engineering Department
• Support investigations into accidents, incidents and near-misses and assist with the completion of required documentation
• Implement corrective actions designed to prevent similar incidents recurring
• Conduct vessel maintenance system and engine room inspections
• Ensure the Oil Record Book, Engine Logbook and other required technical records remain accurate and up to date
• Report and respond appropriately to operational and safety incidents
• Perform additional engineering duties as required

What you’ll bring

• A valid Transport Canada Second-Class Marine Engineer, Motor Ship certificate and associated endorsements
• Valid Marine Emergency Duties (MED) certification
• Marine Basic First Aid certification
• A valid Marine Medical Certificate
• Experience as an engineering officer aboard a similar vessel
• Experience taking responsibility for engineering duties aboard a vessel of 400 gross tonnes or greater
• Strong understanding of onboard emergency equipment and procedures, including firefighting, life-saving equipment, man-overboard equipment and other safety apparatus
• Good working knowledge of vessel operational systems
• Knowledge of applicable Transport Canada and classification society requirements
• Strong knowledge of marine terminology, machinery and engineering components
• Understanding of relevant Canadian occupational health and safety legislation and marine workplace requirements
• Knowledge of the hazards associated with vessel engineering and day-to-day marine operations
• Good written and spoken English
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Basic Microsoft Office skills
• Ability to maintain, monitor, troubleshoot and repair marine diesel engines, hydraulic systems and electrical systems
• Ability to work effectively with vessel personnel and shore-based departments
• Strong organisation, time management and multitasking skills
• Ability to work independently while standing an engineering watch and coordinating vessel engineering responsibilities
• Good attention to detail and accuracy
• Ability to work safely in confined spaces and around heavy machinery and equipment

Package

The hourly rate for this position is $63.34.
