Job Title: CAD Draughtsperson
Location: Portsmouth (hybrid – 3 days on-site)
Reports to: Head of CAD & Visualisation
Candidates must be eligible to live/work in the UK.
Overview of Role:
Responsible for producing high-quality CAD drawings, including general arrangements, structural arrangements, fabrication drawings, and system designs both for our customers and internal departments.
Delivering drawing packages through concept to detailed design phases and fabrication. Typically working as a stand-alone draughtsperson, as part of a multi-disciplined team of design and engineering professionals.
Projects cover, but not limited to, ship design (e.g. passenger vessels, research vessels, tankers, bunker barges), ship structure, ship-to-shore interface/access infrastructure, marine engineering and offshore energy infrastructure.
This role provides a wide variety of work across the entire organisation, working across multiple teams and projects.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- Translate design concepts and sketches into high-quality 2D Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering drawings using AutoCAD, including General Arrangements, Structural Drawings, Schematics and Safety Plans
- Translate design concepts and sketches into high-quality 3D Naval Architecture/Marine Engineering models, develop the models into technical drawings and visual representations using Solidworks
- 3D modelling of vessels and the production of photo realistic rendering, using Solidworks Visualise
- Extensive production, management, and usage of digital media
- Adhere to internal quality assurance protocols, conducting checks to ensure drawings meet design and engineering standards/specifications
- Oversight and active participation in project work, including the creation of innovative solutions and their presentation to clients or Project Managers
- Knowledge, compliance and dissemination of industry draughting standards and techniques
- Awareness of current developments in software, CAD skills and related training opportunities
- Identify and advise areas of concern, with necessary corrective action(s) identified/proposed, at the earliest opportunity
- Able to interpret ship/vessel system and machinery arrangement drawings
- Able to create ship/vessel arrangement and schematic drawings for various systems
- Regulatory knowledge: Awareness of Classification Society, IMO and other rules and regulations applying to ships
- Design skills: Able to think and conceptualise in three dimensions
Knowledge and Qualifications:
Essential
- BTEC Level 4 Mechanical Engineering preferred as a minimum, other qualifications and ‘time served’ will be considered
- City & Guilds (or equivalent) Level 3 or above in a CAD or engineering related discipline
- Experience working as a CAD Draughtsperson, within the marine industry. Will have a number of years’ experience and the interest/ability to continue developing this experience under the supervision of the Head of CAD & Visualisation
- Solidworks and PDM/Vault proficiency, having used these tools consistently and involving 2D and 3D outputs
- Able to provide a portfolio to illustrate experience of rendering and developing ship and/or marine steelwork structural models
- 2D AutoCAD proficiency
- Experience in working to regulatory body standards such as DNV, Lloyds Register, EN and ISO regulations
- Experience of participating in teams of multidiscipline engineers and designers
Desirable
- Demonstrable experience in undertaking ship surveys
- Demonstrable experience in newbuild or conversion
Desirable Software
- Completed relevant CAD software training courses, e.g. Solidworks Certification Program awards
