Engineer, Naval Architecture
Role
As a member of the Hull Engineering team, the Engineer, Naval Architecture will provide technical oversight and support throughout the design, construction, testing / commissioning, and delivery of multiple classes of Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard vessels. This oversight and support will be provided through the application of practical job knowledge that is typically obtained through advanced education and work experience in the field of ship design and construction.
The Engineer, Naval Architecture will work independently with general supervision from the Naval Architecture & Structures Team Lead to review subcontractor calculations, models, reports, and technical specifications to ensure that structural requirements from the customer, Classification Society, and shipyard have been achieved in the design. They will also be responsible for developing solutions to resolve technical issued encountered during construction.
To support the major new design and construction projects that are underway the Engineer, Naval Architecture will be expected to work in both an office and shipbuilding industrial environment to provide Engineering Solutions to complex problems through the application of theoretical, practical, and lean engineering principles.
Responsibilities
- Manage planned and emergent work within their assigned job scope.
- Support the needs of internal & external stakeholders.
- Originate routine or low complexity deliverables.
- Review technical products and deliverables developed by external stakeholders.
- Author processes & procedures documenting how recurring engineering support and deliverables in their assigned discipline are created.
- Develop mitigation plans for risks associated with their engineering discipline and make risk-based technical decisions.
- Identify opportunities for Continuous Improvement within their engineering discipline.
- Support the needs of internal and external stakeholders within limits of delegated Technical Authority.
- Recommend approval or approval of Technical Deliverables and products developed by external stakeholders within limits of delegated Technical Authority.
- Present to internal Senior Management audiences with approval from Engineering Management; and to external audiences with approval from Engineering Management.
Qualifications
- Education:
- Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) or equivalent
- Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or equivalent
- Knowledge and genuine interest of naval / modern ship design and construction methods; standards/regulations applicable to role (Lloyds Register, Transport Canada, IMO, IACS)
- Understanding of scheduling, ability to adhere to strict deadlines, manage & develop schedules
- Working knowledge of shipyard disciplines applicable to ship structural design and construction (hull structure, ship arrangements, producibility, manufacturing)
- Some exposure to or interest in marine field through work experience (e.g. co-op) or academic study
Salary
$87,500 – $95,000 CAD
