Job Overview:

The Commercial Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates for marine construction and ship repair projects. This role involves analysing project plans, specifications, and requirements to determine the scope, resources, materials, and labour costs associated with various projects. The estimator collaborates with project management, production teams, procurement, and sub-contractors, ensuring that bids are competitive, compliant with regulations, and align with company objectives. The successful candidate will report directly to the Commercial Manager under the supervision of the Commercial Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cost Estimation – Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets, and proposals for marine construction, repair, and shipbuilding projects, including materials, labour, equipment, and sub-contractor services. Track and update estimates based on project changes and developments.
  • Bid Preparation – Analyse drawings, technical specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope and requirements, preparing accurate and comprehensive bid proposals.
  • Planning Capabilities – Provide input on project planning and budgeting to ensure financial efficiency.
  • Client & Stakeholder Interaction – Collaborate with clients, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to clarify project requirements, specifications, and changes. Present estimates to management and clients, supporting negotiations and decision-making.
  • Vendor & Supplier Coordination – Source and engage with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing, ensuring all components are factored into the final estimate.
  • Technical Knowledge – Analyse drawings and specifications to develop accurate cost forecasts.
  • Risk Assessment – Identify project risks and provide recommendations on contingencies, ensuring that estimates reflect potential challenges and costs associated with marine environments.
  • Project Analysis – Review historical data from previous projects and apply lessons learned to enhance the accuracy of future estimates.
  • Technical & Regulatory Compliance – Ensure that all cost estimates comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, safety protocols, and environmental guidelines, and align with current market trends.
  • Document Management – Maintain detailed and organized records of all estimates, bids, and supporting documents for future reference.
  • Market Research – Stay updated on industry trends, material costs, labour rates, and technological advancements affecting the marine construction and shipbuilding sectors.

Desired Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience in marine commercial estimation, with a strong understanding of marine construction techniques, materials, and equipment.
  • Previous experience in ship repair project management is highly beneficial.
  • Marine engineering or naval architecture background is highly beneficial.
  • Proficient in current IT software programmes.
  • Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in cost calculations.
  • Fluent in English is necessary, additional fluency in Spanish is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Ideal for professionals looking to leverage their hands-on fabrication / project management experience into a specialized estimation role.
  • Willingness to visit project sites and perform on-site inspections as needed.

This job description outlines the primary duties and responsibilities of the Commercial Estimator, which are subject to change based on organisational needs and discretion of the management.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Relocation package provided
  • Starting salary will be based on experience and qualifications.
  • Working hours are Monday to Thursday 08:00 – 16:30hrs, Friday 08:00 – 15:30hrs.
  • Overtime may be required dependant on work demands. This is included in the salary.
  • Generous annual paid leave of 22 days plus bank holidays (currently 12).
  • Eligible for Quarterly Attendance Bonus after 3-month probation period.
  • Eligible to join the company pension scheme after 12 months of continuous employment.
