Naval Architect | Design Engineer (Small Craft)

As a Naval Architect/Design Engineer (Small Craft) you will be part of a dedicated multi-functional team, participating in a wide range of design activities developing new craft, from concept through to delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved in design projects and delivering innovative work. The role presents the opportunity to put your mark on the future products of the Boats Sector portfolio. This vacancy will offer you the opportunity to gain a wide array of knowledge and skills, helping to develop you to senior level and upwards. You will also have the chance to work on innovative vessel designs.

Your main responsibilities will involve:

  • Conducting naval architecture tasks such as structural analyses, stability analyses, inclining experiments, and concept design
  • Conducting all activities in a professional manner delivering naval architecture design solutions to agreed time, cost, and quality to meet project or business milestones
  • Participating in a wide range of activities including concept design, detailed design, support to build, delivery and in-service support to the small boats sector.
  • 3D modelling and 2D drawing, developing technical reports to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients
  • Participation in the preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by bid manager to provide costed proposals for future work
  • Maintaining accurate records of all design related work in accordance with relevant extant procedures to ensure a complete design record of work undertaken
  • Ensuring adequate integration with other engineering functions involved with a particular task or programme of work to ensure all aspects of the naval architecture design solution are considered
  • When appropriate, the supervision of undergraduates or young persons assigned for training to assist in the development of their knowledge and skills
  • Leading minor engineering projects from requirements definition through to delivery
  • Providing sound estimates for engineering work carried out
  • Providing technical guidance to other team members
  • Creating detailed 3D models and 2D drawings, for a wide range of products from small components to whole vessel systems. Producing drawings in accordance with BS8888 Engineering Drawing standards
  • Implementing design changes and provide post-delivery support and resolve obsolescence issues
  • Carrying out engineering calculations as required for the project in their area of expertise
  • Drafting, yetting, and editing technical reports or other documents relevant to, or required by, a particular task to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with recipients
  • Participating in the preparation and submission of technical proposals and tenders as directed by bid the manager to provide costed proposals for future work under the authority of the SDA.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all design related work in accordance with relevant extant procedures to ensure a complete design record of work undertaken
  • Ensuring adequate integration with other engineering functions involved with a particular task or program of work to ensure all aspects of the design solution are considered

 

Your skills and qualifications:

Essential skills:

  • Experience with 3D modelling, ideally using Siemens NX and 2D drafting knowledge and experience
  • Previous experience leading small craft design from concept through to delivery
  • Understanding of Small Craft design standards and processes (IMO, MCA, ISO, DefStan, Classification Rules)
  • BEng Degree, HND/HNC or equivalent experience within a STEM related discipline
  • Awareness of Product Safety and SHE and the participation in HAZIDs
  • Knowledge of commercial and/or military small craft

Desirable skills:

Knowledge or an understanding of some of the below would be desired:

  • Structural design tasks including FEA (Finite Element Analysis)
  • Vessel powering and performance analysis.
  • Small Craft systems design including electrical, fuel bilge etc.
  • Stability analysis, ideally using Maxsurf.
  • GRP and aluminium design and repair knowledge
  • Experience working in a yard environment
